The Roman villa of La Cocosa, excavated since 1945, is one of the most complete Roman villas dug up in Spain. So far, the boundaries of the vast ruin complex have not been determined, which covers several hectares of land. The excavations did not stop at the urban part with residential rooms around the peristyle and private bathrooms (thermae) whose famous mosaic of Triton, a mythical sea creature, is currently on display at the Palace of the Provincial Deputation of Badajoz. Archaeologists also dug up rural structures: modest quarters for subordinates, agricultural tool storage rooms, and production workshops that formed the villa's rustic part. In addition, different construction phases have been analyzed from its founding in the 1st century AD to the 7th century AD. The excavation report was published in a monograph by J. de C. Serra Ráfols in 1952.
