Viktor Rydberg rose above a humble upbringing to secure an education and forge a career as a journalist. Throughout his life, he solidified his position as one of Sweden's premier writers from the 1850s until his passing. Singoalla (1857) is a historical novel that explores the complexities of forbidden love. Rydberg also penned the poem Robin Goodfellow (1881), which begins with the lines "Midwinter's nightly frost is hard, brightly the stars are beaming" and masterfully crafts an atmosphere.
