When Vikings sought to preserve their corn supplies, they would carefully harvest the ripest ears and store them in well-ventilated granaries to maintain freshness. The stored corn was then monitored regularly for signs of spoilage, and any affected grains were promptly removed to prevent further deterioration. To protect against pests and rodents, the granaries were often surrounded by a shallow moat or other barrier, and the entrances were sealed with animal hides or wood planks.
