Viking Lantern Repro (GlowForge)
thingiverse
This is a Viking-inspired lantern pattern designed specifically for use on the GlowForge. You can, of course, utilize another laser cutter if you prefer. In addition to these cut pieces, you'll need: 1/4" Wood or MDF (I used ProofGrade Medium Draft Board) 1/4" Poplar Dowels, cut into six 8" lengths and one 8.5" length (one set per lantern) Brown Kraft Paper, cut to 7.5"x13.5" (one sheet per lantern) Wood Glue Oil-Based Polyurethane 2.75" LED Puck Lights (or other light source of your choice) Paint or Stain for the lantern body 1/8" Sisal Twine or Wire to hang the finished lanterns Here's a step-by-step guide to assemble and finish your Viking-style lantern: 1) Once all pieces are cut, glue the six 1/4" dowels into the bottom (no hole) half of the lantern. Use a gentle rubber mallet to ensure a flush fit. 2) Line up the six dowels with the holes in the top (3" center hole) half of the lantern. 3) Glue the retaining ring for the light source into the center of the oval center piece. 4) Paint/finish the lantern body, the 8.5" dowel, and the oval light holder center piece. 5) Once cured, fit the center piece into the center of the lantern, ensuring opposite dowels fit into notches at the ends. Ensure the hole in the center piece lines up with the slightly larger hole in the top. Fit the 8.5" dowel down through the remaining small hole in the top of the lantern and secure it into the center piece. 6) Place a thin bead of glue along the outside only of each dowel, then wrap Kraft Paper tightly around the spokes of the lantern, securing with rubber bands to dry. This should leave little to no gap between the shade and the body, overlapping by about 1/8" inch. 7) Once the paper is secure, paint it only with oil-based Polyurethane and allow it to dry completely. 8) Using the lifting rod, pull the light base up to the top hole of the lantern and insert your chosen light source.
