Viking Lander - STL
cults3d
NASA's pioneering Viking Project made history as the first U.S. mission to successfully land a spacecraft on Mars' surface and transmit images back to Earth. Two identical spacecraft, each consisting of a lander and an orbiter, were carefully designed and built for this groundbreaking endeavor. The orbiter-lander pairs took off together, entered Mars orbit in unison, and then separated, with the landers plummeting down to the Martian surface. The Viking 1 lander made a precise touchdown on the western slope of Chryse Planitia (a region known as the Plains of Gold), while its counterpart, the Viking 2 lander, safely settled at Utopia Planitia.
