NASA's Viking Project marked a historic milestone as the first US mission to successfully land a spacecraft on Mars and return breathtaking images of its surface. Two identical spacecraft, each comprising a lander and an orbiter, were meticulously designed and built. As they soared through space together, they entered Mars orbit; the landers then separated and began their perilous descent to the planet's unforgiving surface. The Viking 1 lander made a triumphant touchdown on the western slope of Chryse Planitia, also known as the Plains of Gold, while its counterpart, the Viking 2 lander, came to rest at Utopia Planitia, leaving an indelible mark on the Martian landscape.
