Norse seafarers known as Vikings dominated Northern Europe from the late 8th to late 11th centuries, raiding and trading extensively across wide areas of Europe. They explored westwards to Iceland, Greenland, and Vinland. The term Vikings is commonly used in modern English and other vernaculars to describe the inhabitants of Norse home communities during the Viking Age. This period of Nordic military, mercantile, and demographic expansion is a crucial element in the early medieval history of Scandinavia, Estonia, the British Isles, France, Kievan Rus', and Sicily. Vikings were facilitated by advanced sailing and navigational skills, and characterized by their longships. Their activities extended into the Mediterranean littoral, North Africa, and the Middle East at times. Following phases of exploration, expansion, and settlement, Viking communities and governments were established in diverse areas of north-western Europe, Belarus, Ukraine, and European Russia, as well as the North Atlantic islands and the north-eastern coast of North America. This period witnessed the wider dissemination of Norse culture while introducing strong foreign cultural influences into Scandinavia itself. Popular modern conceptions of the Vikings often differ significantly from the complex picture that emerges from archaeology and historical sources. A romanticized picture of Vikings as noble savages began to emerge in the 18th century, developing and spreading widely during the 19th-century Viking revival. Perceived views of Vikings as violent, piratical heathens or intrepid adventurers owe much to conflicting versions of the modern Viking myth that took shape by the early 20th century. Current popular representations of the Vikings are based on cultural clichés and stereotypes, complicating modern appreciation of their legacy. These representations are not always accurate, for instance, there is no evidence they wore horned helmets. Academics also debate Viking ethnicities.
