Vierge en majesté du XIVe siècle

Vierge en majesté du XIVe siècle

A wooden tilleul sculpture, partially painted with ancient hues, stands 75 cm tall. The Virgin's sceptre is missing and the globe is modern. Gothic in style, this statue was crafted for the 12th-century Romanesque chapel of Corminboeuf, dedicated to Saint-George, in Fribourg, Switzerland. It fits within a line of medieval Vierges de majesté, seated on their throne, facing forward, presenting the divine Child to adoring faithfuls. This type gradually gave way to the Virgin of tenderness from the mid-14th century, a mother in a less static position interacting with her child.
