Victor Hugo was born on February 26, 1802 and died on May 22, 1885 as a renowned French poet, novelist, and playwright of the Romantic era. He ranks among the greatest and most recognizable French writers. In France, Hugo's literary reputation is built first on his poetry and then on his novels and dramatic achievements. Among numerous collections of poetry, Les Contemplations and La Légende des siècles stand out for their critical acclaim. Outside France, his most famous works are the novels Les Misérables, published in 1862, and Notre-Dame de Paris, released in 1831 (known as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame in English). He created over 4,000 drawings that have been admired for their beauty. Hugo also earned widespread respect as a champion for social causes such as the abolition of capital punishment.
