The Maxim Mark I .303 heavy machine-gun was designed and built by Vickers Sons & Maxim at Enfield. This model played a significant role in both the South African War (1899-1902) and World War I. In 1901, the New Zealand Army acquired four of these guns, but by 1916 they had become outdated as frontline artillery.
