sketchfab
Recreated remains of an ancient warrior unearthed from a 7th-century burial ground in southern Italy's heartland reveal the profile of a likely barbarian invader who stormed Europe during the migration era. The site showcases a unique blend of cultural influences - Germanic (Longobard), local (Roman/Byzantine) and Steppe (Avar/Bulgar) traditions, which give insight into the ethnic diversity of the time. A remarkable discovery is that this warrior was laid to rest alongside his horse, signifying a high rank akin to a medieval knight. Moreover, he was also buried with stirrups - one of the earliest recorded examples in Western Europe.
