A V12 engine comprises twelve cylinders mounted in two sets of six on the crankcase, each set being a balanced straight-six. This inherent balance eliminates the need for balance shafts. The even firing order of a four-stroke 12-cylinder engine is achieved when cylinders fire every 60° of crankshaft rotation. A V12 with cylinder banks at multiples of 60° achieves this without split crankpins, while any V angle can be used by employing split crankpins or tolerating minor vibrations.
