Upper Paleolithic Era c.50,000 BC - c.10,000 BC. Approximately 1.7 to 1.5 million years ago, a profound shift occurred in the African prehistoric record. The emergence of a new, larger-brained Homo species was accompanied by a technological revolution. In this groundbreaking technology, we see more complex forms of tools, specifically handaxes, which are characterized as bifacially flaked and often pear-shaped. Typically, these tools were flaked around their entire circumference, with the thinner end being sharper than the thicker end. This design allowed for efficient handling of the tool.
