The vertical X-axis concept features a compact extruder integrated into the x-carriage thanks to direct drive and linear bearings. Initially designed for the "classic" Sells Mendel as an upgrade, it's also compatible with Prusa Mendel due to similar z-rod spacing. The x-carriage-extruder is compatible with most hotends or custom diameters if your thermal break part (PTFE/PEEK) doesn't fit the standard 13mm. Recent updates include replacing the old X-axis on a Sells Mendel with VertX 0.7.3 and wiki page updates. The first print was successfully achieved in October 2011, followed by adding mounting points for more hotends in November. V0.8 release includes x-carriage v12, x-end-idler-v9, and x-end-motor-v8 improvements. For the x-ends, using two perimeters helps avoid small-segments-filling that may shake the bot. Infill in the direction of bridge (in Carve) ensures better bearing closure when unchecked. The x-carriage requires one perimeter, and for mendel-parts v6, the PEEK hole mount is 13mm while it's 18mm for v9. Check the wiki page for assembly instructions.
