This artwork was crafted by François Barois (1656–1726), a renowned French sculptor. Born and raised in Paris, Barois made his mark at the French Academy in Rome, where he spent years perfecting his craft. Between 1683 and 1686, he worked tirelessly to create a stunning copy of the Kallipygian Venus for King Louis XIV of France. His masterpiece, Cleopatra Dying, was unveiled in 1700 as his reception piece for the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, and it now proudly resides in the Musée du Louvre. Joining this esteemed collection are three more of Barois' remarkable works: Spring and Autumn (therm figures) and Pomona, both beautifully displayed at the Louvre. As part of a large team of skilled sculptors, Barois contributed to the breathtaking decorative vases and sculptural elements that adorn the gardens of Versailles.
