The backbone, also known as the spine or vertebral column, makes up part of the axial skeleton. This is what defines every vertebrate - the notochord, a flexible rod found in all chordates, has been replaced by vertebrae, a series of bones that are separate and distinct from each other by intervertebral discs. The backbone contains the spinal canal, a cavity that encloses and safeguards the spinal cord.
