Incomplete cervical vertebra presents section of vertebral disk and neural arch from a specimen of Megatherium sp. Located in Pampa del Tamarugal. Commune of Pozo Almonte. Region of Tarapacá. The Megatherium of Tarapacá corresponds to a giant perissodactyl (Megatherium sp.) specimen discovered in 1959 on the Pampa del Tamarugal, in the area of ancient washouts within the cone of deposition that spreads over the existing plain between Matilla and Cuminalla areas towards La Huayca. In the Regional Museum, there are various records associated with Megatherium sp., Scelidodon sp., and other species related to the fauna of the Quaternary period (Pleistocene/Holocene) 2.9 million to 10 thousand years ago according to the latest radiocarbon datings of Megatherium in Quebrada Maní, Commune of Pozo Almonte.
