VertBoy - Vertical Raspberry Pi 2 Portable Game System
thingiverse
This is a portable handheld video game emulation station built around a Raspberry Pi 2 micro-PC. The console features a vertical layout and relies on tac switches rather than elastomers. I originally aimed to create a design similar to Adafruit's Super Game Pi, but my Printrbot's layout prevented the shell from fitting properly. I was inspired by Carisibana's innovative idea for the Super Game Pi SP, which encouraged me to design a console of my own. My vision was for a device that: - Utilizes a 6x6 printing bed - Employs hard tac-switches over rubbery elastomers - Has a vertical layout reminiscent of classic GameBoys - Is simple to assemble and modify - Runs on the Raspberry Pi 2, unlike older models One file I've attached is the console's design in 123d Design. It displays the layout of the components. For further instructions, please visit: Instructions -------------- The console closely follows Adafruit's Super Game Pi tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/super-game-pi/overview. The necessary components are those listed on the tutorial page, with two additions: a Perf Board and 4-40 3/8" screws. Additionally, you will need the buttons available at https://www.adafruit.com/product/1009. In comparison to Adafruit's instructions, you should take note of button placement and soldering procedures. Button Placement and Soldering ----------------------------- The buttons must be positioned to align with holes on the front panel of the console. They should then be soldered onto jumper-style wires and connected to the Pi in a layout mirroring that used for SNES controller buttons on Adafruit's guide. Keep in mind that L and R button legs require extension due to their unique attachment needs, and can share ground connections. Fastening Buttons ----------------- You have two options for fastening these: use Fun-Tak adhesive or create additional holes on the Perf Board. This should provide enough security for your device. Attaching Side Mounts and Panel Assembly ----------------------------------------- It is best to place "SideMounts" around the console's sides and back before connecting any panels, making sure the device has reached its full length and allowing easier manipulation. Left and right side mounts can be duplicated for added security in their connections. For the screen, it is advisable to secure with Fun-Tak or electrical tape on the "TopUpper" panel. Screen Mounting Note -------------------- I removed six of the eight clips from my screen due to an accident where I broke a $30 screen. This should help others avoid this mistake and enjoy better device integrity. Additional Assembly Considerations --------------------------------- Given that my panels were somewhat warped, the screen is slightly bulged outward. Final Comments and Shoutouts --------------------------- This design was largely inspired by Adafruit's project, as well as Carisibana's innovative approach.
