Pietro Verri was born on December 12, 1728, in Milan. He went on to become a prominent figure in the fields of politics, economics, journalism, and academia. Verri served as a government official, leading an academy in Milan and authoring numerous works on literature, history, and economics. Verri's educational background was well-rounded, having studied at various institutions including Monza, Milan, Rome, and Parma. He even saw action during the Seven Years' War, serving as a captain in the Austrian army. Upon his return to Milan, he became a key figure in the Società dei Pugni, an influential group of intellectuals who drew inspiration from the French Encyclopedists. Between 1764 and 1766, Verri played a pivotal role in directing Il caffè, a periodical that served as a platform for his brother Alessandro's writings. Pietro contributed no fewer than 38 articles on literary subjects to this publication. As an accomplished government official, Verri worked tirelessly towards administrative reform and the revitalization of commerce in Milan. Among his notable policy achievements was the abolition of tax farming, a practice that involved selling tax collection franchises to private individuals. He also implemented significant reductions and simplifications to tariffs. Verri's works on economics include Riflessioni sulle leggi vincolanti (1769) and Meditazioni sull'economia politica (1771). The correspondence between Verri and his brother, Carteggio di Pietro e Alessandro Verri, comprises 12 volumes published between 1910 and 1942, offering a vivid glimpse into life in Milan during their time.
