The Vernon Hills wonderstone is a unique Oligocene-era rock formation, specifically a welded-vitric tuff with rhyolitic composition. This volcanic rock is primarily composed of volcanic glass particles that have been fused together by intense heat and compressed under the weight of overlying materials. The vibrant banding patterns visible in the rock are a result of alteration caused by circulating groundwater.
