A combustion engine, also known as an internal combustion engine, transforms the chemical energy of a fuel into mechanical work through burning. The combustion takes place in a chamber where a mixture of fuel and ambient air is ignited. The thermal expansion of the resulting hot gas is utilized to move a piston. Common examples of combustion engines are gasoline engines (Otto cycle) and diesel engines in cars.
