Venus Callipyge at the Louvre, Paris
cults3d
The Callipygian Venus, also known as the Aphrodite Kallipygos or simply Venus Callipyge, translates to "Venus with beautiful buttocks" in literal terms. This Ancient Roman marble sculpture is believed to be an exact replica of a much older Greek masterpiece. In a striking example of anasyrma, the statue showcases a partially draped woman, lifting her light peplos to reveal her hips and buttocks, while glancing back and down over her shoulder with an air of self-evaluation. Conventional identification assigns this subject as Venus (Aphrodite), but it's equally possible that she may be a mortal woman being portrayed.
