The goddess of Love stands proudly upright, her torso bared. A heavy mantle has slipped from her shoulders, clinging precariously to her hips. This sculpture recalls the iconic Aphrodite statues crafted by renowned fourth-century BC Athenian sculptor Praxiteles. Workshops during the Roman period produced faithful copies of famous Greek masterworks and innovative versions that blended classical vocabulary to create something entirely new. In 1775, painter and dealer Gavin Hamilton discovered this marble statue in an ancient bath building at Ostia near Rome. The arms were restored, and the statue was placed on a new plinth. This object is part of "Scan The World".
