Originally commissioned in 1756 and completed around 1767, the Venus at Bath has a concept inspired by Giambologna but suffers from lumpish execution and uninspired drapery. Praise from Diderot caught the attention of Madame Du Barry, who acquired the sculpture for her Louveciennes residence. In 1772, she commissioned a pendant with a similar subject but different mood - a Diana surprised by Actaeon, completed five years later and exhibited in the artist's studio before joining the collection at the Louvre, Paris.
