Venus Anadyomene, from Greek, meaning "Venus Emerges from the Sea," is one of the most recognizable depictions of Aphrodite, immortalized in a renowned painting by Apelles, now lost to history but vividly described in Pliny's Natural History. According to legend, Apelles chose Campaspe, a mistress of Alexander the Great, as his model for this masterpiece. The idea behind Aphrodite rising from the sea is said to have been inspired by Phryne, a courtesan known for her daring stunts during the festivals of Eleusinia and Poseidonia, where she would often swim naked in the ocean. A scallop shell, frequently featured in Venus Anadyomenes, serves as a powerful symbol of the female vulva.
