Ducts are essential in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for delivering and removing air, including supply air, return air, exhaust air, and ventilation air. Made from various materials, ducts help maintain indoor air quality and thermal comfort. Common duct materials include galvanized steel, galvanized mild steel, aluminum, and pre-insulated panels with polyurethane or phenolic foam insulation. Metal ducts can be lined with fiberglass blankets (duct liner) or wrapped externally with fiberglass blankets (duct wrap). Round ducts are made using a continuous spiral forming machine in various diameters, while rectangular ductwork is fabricated to suit by specialized metal shops in 4' sections. Aluminum ducts are lightweight and easy to shape, while pre-insulated panels require no additional insulation and can be installed as a single step.
