This proposed speedometer is RF linked to the wheel pickup, utilizing an RFID-like system where the magnet on the wheel spoke generates a pulse of RF picked up by the device. The display would be a red dot matrix LCD screen, backlit by LEDs for visibility in low light conditions. Two capacitive touch sensors on either side of the device allow glove-friendly operation; activating one switches on the backlight and puts the speedometer into command mode, which lasts as long as the backlight is on. This enables adjusting settings or display options. Additionally, incorporating extra capacitive touch sensors could enable Bluetooth control of music players via simple gesture commands. The design offers ergonomic benefits, ease of use while moving, waterproofing, and a visually consistent appearance with the Velodroom color scheme. However, it would require battery operation and may have reduced battery life due to backlight usage. The design is more complex electronically compared to traditional wired solutions with buttons.
