History Located at 28.586, -80.651 in NASA's Kennedy Space Center, halfway between Jacksonville and Miami, the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) is a massive structure that sits due east of Orlando on Merritt Island, along the Atlantic coast of Florida. It's one of the world's largest buildings, ranking third place globally, and stands as the largest single-story building in the world. Until 1974, it was also the tallest building in Florida. Originally built to vertically assemble Saturn V rocket stages for the Apollo program, the VAB's massive height presented a challenge: the conducting rod at the tip of the Saturn V had to be removed to fit inside the building. Today, the VAB is used for housing external fuel tanks and flight hardware. It serves as the location where Orbiter mating (stacking) with solid rocket boosters and external fuel tanks takes place to create a complete Shuttle Transport System, known simply as the Space Shuttle. Once assembled, the Shuttle Transport System is moved on the Mobile Launcher Platform and Crawler-Transporter to Launch Complex 39.
