The VAZ-2108, known as the Lada Samara in Western Europe (and as the Lada Sputnik in Russia) is a small family car produced by Soviet/Russian manufacturer AvtoVAZ under the Lada brand from 1984 to 2013. The name 'Samara' was initially used for exported models, while it was called 'Sputnik' in the USSR until 1991 when the sedan version of Samara entered production. It was the first front-wheel drive car made in the Soviet Union post the LuAZ-969V. The Samara was restyled and modified throughout its production span before being discontinued in December 2013. Lada aimed for a robust build, ease of maintenance and modern design with the Samara, which came in three, four or five door designs with 1.1, 1.3 and 1.5-litre petrol engines. The car was intended to compete in the European market and was AvtoVAZ's first autonomous design (following Niva SUV) and first Lada not based on Fiat-derived mechanics.
