Vasile Lucaciu was a Romanian Greek-Catholic priest who stood for equal rights with Hungarians in Transylvania. He belonged to the National Romanian Party and co-authored the Transylvanian Memorandum in 1892. As a result, Vasile Lucaciu faced trial for homeland betrayal in Kolozsvár/Cluj in May 1894, receiving five years in prison but being released after one year. In 1905, he was elected deputy for Belényes/Beiuş constituency in the Hungarian Parliament. Vasile Lucaciu joined a group of Romanian Habsburg subjects exiled to the United States in March 1917, sending a delegation to campaign for Romania's cause.
