A vase is an open container that can be made from various materials like ceramics, glass, non-rusting metals such as aluminum, brass, bronze or stainless steel, and even wood, using rot-resistant species or coated conventional ones. Decorated vases are often used to hold cut flowers, with sizes varying to support the flowers' shape and stability. Vase shapes typically include a base (bulbous, flat, carinate, etc.), a body, a shoulder where it curves inward, a neck for height, and a lip flaring out at the top. Some vases also have handles. Throughout history and across cultures, numerous styles and types of vases have emerged; for instance, Chinese ceramics, Native American pottery, ancient Greek pottery used for painting scenes from mythology, and in modern times, Grayson Perry's Turner Prize-winning ceramics, often in vase form.
