In ancient times, artisans crafted numerous terracotta figurines in the shape of ornate bottles - containers for fragrant oils. Originating in Rhodes, Samos or Miletus, these were shipped extensively throughout the Mediterranean, reaching Italy in the west and the shores of the Black Sea in the north. The most impressive terracotta sculptures from the Hellenistic era were created at Myrina, a small city holding little political importance between Smyrna and Pergamon. Some reflect contemporary trends in large-scale sculpture, while others display the names of their makers on the back. The terracottas of Hellenistic Cyprus demonstrate the blend of local and international influences characteristic of the island during this period. This object is part of "Scan The World".
