Vase in the form of a female figure at The British Museum, London
myminifactory
In ancient times, artisans created numerous figurines in the shape of perfume bottles - vessels for scented oil. Produced in Rhodes, Samos, and Miletus, these were transported extensively throughout the Mediterranean, reaching Italy to the west and the shores of the Black Sea to the north. The most impressive terracotta figures of the Hellenistic era were crafted at Myrina, a small city lacking significant political influence between Smyrna and Pergamon. Some reflect contemporary trends in large-scale sculpture, while a few bear the signatures of their creators on the back. The terracottas of Hellenistic Cyprus demonstrate the blend of local and international influences characteristic of the island during this period. This object is part of "Scan The World."
