Variac Replacement Post Standoff

Variac Replacement Post Standoff

I purchased a variac a few weeks ago but when it finally arrived, I noticed that shipping had taken its toll on the unit. The front sheet metal was severely dented in several places (luckily I managed to straighten most of them out before taking the photos), and the insulator/standoffs for the posts were also damaged. One of them was completely destroyed, while two others were cracked but still somewhat intact. Thankfully, only one of the four original parts remained undamaged. I decided to replace all of the damaged components with 3D printed versions, so I grabbed my calipers and carefully measured the dimensions of the single intact part. With those measurements in hand, I quickly created a model using OpenSCAD. Once I had the design perfected, I sent it off to be printed in some sturdy grey ABS plastic. To my delight, everything came out perfectly when I reassembled the variac. The new parts fit like a glove and looked great, too!
