Electronic music scenes were thriving in the 1980s, yet a new sound was emerging from the underground - Vaporwave. It started as an avant-garde movement born out of digital culture and nostalgia for retrofuturism. The first wave of Vaporwave artists used manipulated samples of 1970s and 1980s American advertising jingles, jazz, lounge music, and corporate media to create a unique sonic experience that reflected their disillusionment with consumerist society. They drew upon the sounds of the past, but presented them in a way that was both futuristic and decaying - an audio representation of the decay of modern life. As Vaporwave evolved, its followers began experimenting with new sounds and styles, incorporating noise, ambient textures, and even field recordings into their music. Despite its fragmented and DIY nature, Vaporwave's impact on electronic music was undeniable, inspiring a new generation of artists to push boundaries and challenge conventions.
