History Alfred Van Cleef's partnership with his father-in-law, Salomon Arpels, formed the company in 1896. In 1906, after Arpels' passing, Alfred and two brothers-in-law, Charles and Julien, secured a location for Van Cleef & Arpels at 22 Place Vendôme, directly across from the Hôtel Ritz, where Van Cleef & Arpels opened its first boutique shop. Louis, the third Arpels brother, soon joined the company. Van Cleef & Arpels launched boutiques in popular holiday destinations like Deauville, Vichy, Le Touquet, Nice, and Monte-Carlo. In 1925, a Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet adorned with red and white roses made from rubies and diamonds won the top prize at the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts. Alfred and Esther's daughter, Renée (born Rachel) Puissant, took over the company's artistic direction in 1926. Working closely with draftsman René Sim Lacaze for twenty years, Puissant was a key figure in shaping Van Cleef & Arpels' vision. The company expanded into new markets, becoming the first French jewelers to open boutiques in Japan and China. Compagnie Financière Richemont S.A. acquired the firm in 1999. In 1966, Van Cleef & Arpels was tasked with creating a stunning crown for Empress Farah Pahlavi ahead of her coronation in 1967. A team traveled to Iran to select the most impressive gems for the crown. After eleven months of work, Van Cleef & Arpels presented the empress with a regal crown made from emerald velvet adorned with thirty-six emeralds, thirty-six rubies, one hundred and five pearls, and fourteen hundred and sixty-nine diamonds. Boutiques Van Cleef & Arpels has stores throughout the Middle East and South East Asia, showcasing its products in standalone boutiques, major department store boutiques, and independent stores.
