I wanted to get some fans for my index but none of the existing designs looked good. So I made my own which in my opinion complements the design of the Valve Index quite well! **I do sell the finished product on my Etsy store!https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1047496097/valve-index-dual-fan-frunk-mod-set?ref=shop_home_active_1**
Before you continue please read:
I am not responsible for any damages that could occur from bad wiring/soldering, I use my fan mod daily and I haven't had any issues so please only make this if you're experienced. **Please use 5v fans!** as we're going to be powering them from the USB in the frunk. This design doesn't require any supports but does require some post-processing! So make sure you have a scalpel (lubricant might also be needed).
What's needed:
- 2x 40x10mm 5v fan - 8x 2x15mm bolt with nut (If your fans come with it then this is unnecessary) - 1x 2 Position 3P Micro Slide Switch Latching Toggle Switch - 1x USB 2.0 Type A 4 Pin Male Jack End - 22 Gauge Standed Wire
You can also get:
- 1/8 inch PET Expandable Braided Sleeving - Heat Shrink Tubing - 2 Pin JST Micro Electrical Male & Female Connector Plug (For easy fan replacement)
Printing:
Layer Thickness: 0.20mm Infill: 15%-20% Infill pattern: Grid/Gyroid MAKE SURE ALL PIECES ARE TOUCHING THE BUILD PLATE FLAT! (I didn't orientate them correctly, please note the image for reference.) Print all objects as shown in the Slicer image, No supports needed!. You can print the insert another colour to give it a nice contrast. The shell can be printed in whatever filament you want, but make sure with the insert to use filament with good layer bonding.
Post-processing:
Clean out the holes in the insert with a screwdriver/scalpel.
Wiring
- Wire/solder the fans together (Black to black and red to red) - Solder the red wires to the right most pin of the switch - Solder the USB with both red and black wires, Keep the length of the USB cable around 60mm - Solder the Red USB wire into the middle pin of the switch - Solder the Black USB wire to the Black Fan wire
Install
Once the holes have been cleared, screw the fans into the Insert. The Screws/bolts should be flush with the flat bottom. If your bolts/screws are not flush you'd have to get new bolts/screws as it won't sit flush with the Shell. Once the fans are installed manage the cables under the plastic lip on the right-hand side and then press the insert into the shell. (If you're having issues with pushing the insert into the shell lubricate all 4 of the clips that can be found on the shell. Manage the cables in the cable box that's on the right-hand side and push the switch through the hole. The pins that hold the switch in place but if it moves be sure to glue it in. (Keep in mind there is minimal space in the cable tidy, this must be organized well in order to put the cover on) Finally, route the USB through the hole cut out in the insert and press the cable cover on top of it. it should clip into place. There is a lip that goes into the shell in order to clip it into place. (The hole size of the USB hole is around 2.5mm)
Conclusion
And you should be finished! It's quite a lengthy process but great fun to do and you get a product that really helps with longer play sessions in VR. If you wish to tip me for this creation that would be most appriciated! **Disclaimer:** Please do not sell this design! Any questions then please do leave a comment.
