Human: Valmara 69 or V-69 is a potent Italian-made bounding anti-personnel mine manufactured by Valsella. Developed from the V-59 mine, it still wreaks havoc in many parts of the world despite being discontinued in Italy. Copies were produced in other countries like Singapore's "SPM-1" and South Africa's J-69. The South African version, J-69, is an exact replica of the Italian Valmara 69, while a single center prong version was also manufactured. South Africa no longer produces these mines due to compliance with the Mine Ban Treaty requirements. Description The mine features a short olive green or sand-colored plastic body housing a steel bounding body. On top is a round fuse cap with five prongs. The mine detonates when the fuse cap tilts, triggered by pressure on one of the prongs or a pull on an attached tripwire. This mechanism remains unaffected by overpressure. When triggered, a spring-loaded firing pin ignites a propelling charge at the base of the mine. The charge launches the mine into the air, reaching approximately 50 cm above ground before detonating. The mine's lethal radius is 25 meters, with fragments remaining hazardous beyond that distance. The time from triggering to detonation is mere seconds, leaving no opportunity for cover. This makes it a particularly deadly device. This mine contains significant metal content, making it easily detectable using a metal detector. However, its underground placement often renders it difficult to spot, especially in dense undergrowth. The Valmara 69 can be laid alongside minimum metal mines like the VS-50 and TS-50, complicating clearance efforts. Valsella also produced an electronic anti-handling device called the VS-AR, designed for use with various Valsella products, including the Valmara 69. This device features a mechanical arming delay followed by an electronic arming delay, providing an added layer of security. The Valmara 69 is found in several countries, including Angola, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Kuwait, Mozambique, Sudan, and Western Sahara.
