Picking out half of those who die in battle (the other half go to Freyja's afterlife field Fólkvangr), the valkyries bring their chosen to Valhalla, ruled by Odin, where they become einherjar (Old Norse "single fighters"). When the einherjar aren't getting ready for Ragnarök, the valkyries serve them mead. Valkyries also appear as lovers of heroes and mortals, often described as royalty's daughters, accompanied by ravens, or connected to swans or horses. Valkyries are found in the Poetic Edda (a collection of poems compiled from earlier sources), the Prose Edda, Heimskringla (both by Snorri Sturluson) and Njáls saga (one of Iceland's Sagas), all written or compiled in the 13th century. They appear throughout skaldic poetry, a 14th-century charm, and various runic inscriptions. The Old English terms wælcyrge and wælcyrie appear in several Old English manuscripts, with scholars discussing whether they came from Norse influence or reflect a tradition among Anglo-Saxon pagans. Theories have been proposed about the connection between valkyries, Norns, and dísir (all supernatural figures associated with fate). Archaeological discoveries throughout Scandinavia have uncovered amulets believed to depict valkyries. In modern times, valkyries have inspired works of art, music, comic books, video games and poetry.
