They choose among half of those who fall in combat, sending the other half to Freyja's afterlife field Fólkvangr. The chosen warriors are brought by the valkyries to Valhalla, the hall ruled over by Odin, where they become einherjar when not preparing for Ragnarök. During this time, the valkyries serve them mead. As lovers of heroes and other mortals, valkyries appear as daughters of royalty, sometimes accompanied by ravens or connected to swans or horses. Valkyries are mentioned in several ancient texts, including the Poetic Edda, the Prose Edda, the Heimskringla, and the Njáls saga. They also appear throughout the poetry of skalds and in a 14th-century charm. Scholars have explored whether their terms come from Norse influence or reflect a tradition native to Anglo-Saxon pagans. Scholarly theories propose connections between valkyries, the Norns, and the dísir, all supernatural figures associated with fate. Archaeological excavations throughout Scandinavia have uncovered amulets believed to depict valkyries. In modern culture, valkyries have inspired works of art, music, comic books, video games, and poetry.
