The castle's senior housekeeper is out gathering meadowsweet to cover the floors, attempting to mask the damp smell that permeates the castle. She hopes that the Maxwells will bring an abundance of tapestries to adorn the rooms, thereby warming the chilly atmosphere and making up for the drafty conditions within the castle walls. The senior housekeeper's character is inspired by Valerie, the monument manager, who also lends her voice to this role. As head of the cleaning staff, the senior housekeeper was responsible for ensuring that the castle fires were lit and the floors were swept clean. If the tapestries became dusty, she would arrange for them to be taken outside and beaten to restore their vibrancy. The senior housekeeper's tasks never seemed to end, as medieval castles were notoriously dirty places.
