An impeller, sometimes called a rotor or impellar, is a crucial component in devices that regulate fluid flow and pressure. Within centrifugal pumps, it receives motor-driven energy and transfers it to the pumped fluid by accelerating its outward movement from the center of rotation. As the fluid reaches high velocity, it gains pressure when confined within the pump casing. Impellers are typically short cylinders with an open inlet, vane-equipped for radial force application, and a bore designed to accommodate a drive-shaft. Cast material impellers can also be referred to as rotors, and are often mounted directly on their support structure, which is driven by a gearbox connected to an electric motor, combustion engine, or steam-driven turbine. In some cases, the mounting bolts link both the spindle and the impeller together under the term 'rotor'.
