The V1 locomotive underwent significant development from the Class A1/A3 Pacifics, receiving a shortened boiler and reduced diameter driving wheels, yet retaining the distinctive three-cylinder monobloc arrangement. This versatile machine was tasked with a range of duties, from heavy freight haulage to express passenger services, despite its weight which occasionally restricted it to specific lines. At one point boasting 186 members, these engines earned recognition for their versatility in filling gaps left by Gresley Pacific classes on high-speed trains and introducing a new standard in efficient freight transportation.
