V Spaceship Stacked Vector replica
thingiverse
Here is an idea I came up with a few years ago, and thought I would share it here for free. It's a stacked vector concept that can be used to re-create almost any 3D model in any material that is in sheet form. I'm sure I'm not the first person to think of this, but here it is. By slicing a 3D model into slices the width of a chosen real-world material, the profiles can be rendered out and cut out of that material and stacked on top of each other. I used the method to create this spaceship from the 80's TV series V, and a wooden Airwolf model. See the Airwolf model here - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2790179 I cut each slice by hand, which I don't recommend, but I supplied the files in DXF and Ai formats, so it can be cut with a CNC machine I believe? I used a slice modifier in 3ds Max to do this, but I'm sure it is possible in most 3D programs. Since this method can be scaled using a projector, I have optimistic plans to create a full-size Zuul terror dog from Ghostbusters by using this technique and large foam sheets.
