The Ute Ulay Mining Complex is situated near Lake City, Colorado, right on the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway to the south. Discovered in 1871, the Ute Ulay mining claims turned out to be among the largest gold and silver producers in the San Juan Mountains at that time. The Bureau of Land Management's Gunnison Field Office has joined forces with Hinsdale County to boost heritage tourism and has preserved several historic structures within the complex by stabilizing them. In 2017, Ute Ulay was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A wooden water tank used to be filled up from a flume coming from the Ute Ulay Dam. This water tank supplied water to the hydropower plant through three vertical pipes to three Leffel turbine water wheels that powered the electrical generating equipment in the power plant. The construction of the water tank took place in 1926, along with the dam, flume, and hydropower plant.
