Originally a modified Spruance Class, the Ticonderoga was later reclassified by the US Navy as a Guided Missile Cruiser due to its Aegis System integration. Media dubbed it the Aegis cruiser because it was the first ship of its kind. From the 1970s through early 1990s, 28 Ticonderoga Class vessels were built, with the second variant (Cruisers CG49-CG58) featuring upgraded electronics and superstructure.
