USS Sulaco
thingiverse
This is my recently completed 800mm long model of the USS Sulaco from the movie Aliens. I carefully dissected the ship into parts to maximize the benefits of 3D printing for each component, resulting in only two parts that require support (57 and 58). A couple of optional parts are included, such as the dropship bay which can be printed open or closed, and these parts are clearly labeled with "optional" in their filenames. Several part options are available for users with access to a DLP printer, mainly for the guns, as otherwise, additional barrels from styrene or brass rod/tube need to be added. The guns (part 85) are specifically designed to have styrene tube added as barrels. Printing at a layer height of 0.2mm will take approximately 90 hours and use about 1050gm of filament. The model features a 12mm hole at the front and rear underneath, allowing for easy mounting on a base. The majority of the ship can be assembled using M3 screws. I used 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm long screws in various locations. Additionally, there are a few places where M2x6 screws are used; in these cases, I recommend using socket head (hex) screws as they blend in and appear like detail. The file part numbers include the quantity to print and whether it's for the left or right side, such as Sulaco82_left_x1.stl and Sulaco72x2.stl. To make things more convenient, a zip file containing all the parts is available here: http://members.iinet.net.au/~canison/Sulaco/Sulaco_STLs.zip Assembly instructions can be downloaded from this link: http://members.iinet.net.au/~canison/Sulaco/SulacoInstructions.pdf Join my Facebook group to share your build and connect with others who are working on this project. You can find it here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/360348098234645/ UPDATE 1/8/19: I made a mistake! I forgot to include one part – the lower front face where the antenna connect. I've uploaded it as part "Sulaco14a.stl" and apologize for the oversight. UPDATE 14/8/19: Some users pointed out that there were a few things missing from the instructions, so I've updated them. Be sure to download the instruction zip file again. Changes: * Step 8 – Add antenna from styrene beam/rod * Step 64 – Add gun barrel from styrene tube * Step 78 – Add antenna from styrene beam/rod Additions: * Steps 80 to 93 for the guns UPDATE 12/9/19: I've updated the instructions with actual part numbers to make it easier to plan printing.
