Built mainly for the US Navy between 1941-1944, the PCS class submarine chasers served as well-armed coastal antisubmarine warfare vessels with a speed of 22 knots. Larger than PT Boats but slower, they excelled in fast attacks on submerged submarines. They were also more heavily armed than a surfaced submarine and had steel hulls powered by diesel turbines, offering good range. The PC Class sub chasers played an active role in coastal waters supporting fleet actions and were credited with destroying submarines during the war.
