The USS New Jersey (BB-62), also known as "Big J" or "Black Dragon," is an Iowa-class battleship that was the second US Navy vessel named after the state of New Jersey. During WWII, she shelled targets in Guam and Okinawa, and screened carriers during Marshall Islands raids. In the Korean War, she participated in North Korean coastline raids before being decommissioned into the mothball fleet. Reactivated briefly in 1968 for Vietnam support and again in the '80s as part of the 600-ship Navy program, New Jersey served in Lebanese Civil War operations in 1983. Decommissioned for the final time in 1991 with 21 years of active service, she received a Navy Unit Commendation for Vietnam actions and 19 battle stars for WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Lebanese Civil War, and Persian Gulf service. After a short mothball tenure, she was donated to the Home Port Alliance in Camden as a museum ship from October 2001.
