USS Monitor Turret
sketchfab
Here's a laser scan of USS Monitor's iconic gun turret taken by API Services of Newport News, Virginia, during the summer of 2016. Since this is laser scan data, not photogrammetric models like those seen in this collection, you won't see any photorealistic texture on this image. However, having access to data as accurate as a few centimeters means we can now study the construction and use-life features of the artifact while it's still submerged in its conservation treatment bath at The Mariners' Museum and Park in Newport News, Virginia. The ship flipped over during the sinking, so the turret remains upside down in treatment. This model gives us the ability to go inside the turret and experience it right side up, just as the sailors did!
